Spotify vs Apple Music vs YouTube Music Family Plans 2026: Who Actually Lets You Share?
Spotify confirmed on October 22, 2026 that Family members may face an in-person QR check within seven days, with a 12-month ban on joining another shared plan for failures. Family plans still cost $21.99 at Spotify, $19.99 at Apple Music, and $26.99 at YouTube Premium — and all three require a shared household.

The short version
Spotify confirmed on October 22, 2026 that it is tightening checks on its Family plan: members may be asked to scan a QR code shown on the plan manager's phone, in person, within seven days — and failing can block you from joining another Family or Duo plan for 12 months. The family plans themselves still cost $21.99 a month at Spotify, $19.99 at Apple Music, and $26.99 at YouTube Premium in the US, and all three still say members must share a household. So the real question is no longer which family plan is cheapest. It's which one still fits the way your household actually lives. This page puts the three side by side, dated and priced, so a household can pick the right one instead of the one with the loudest ads.
Spotify wants to see you in the same room
Here is the scene Spotify has now confirmed, and it is worth picturing before any price table. A member of a Premium Family plan gets a notification. To keep their seat, they scan a QR code — displayed on the plan manager's phone, scanned with their own phone, in person. The code refreshes every few seconds, so a screenshot sent to a friend across town does not work. Spotify's own support wording, as reported this week, says both the manager and the member need to be in the same place to complete the scan.
Miss the seven-day window and the penalty is not a warning email. The member drops to Spotify Free and cannot join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months. Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström, asked about it on the company's third-quarter earnings call on October 22, called it a "routine improvement" to verification, not a crackdown, and noted the Family plan has been around for 12 or 13 years and makes up a large share of subscribers.
Call it what you like. A routine improvement does not usually come with a year-long ban.
This is not a new rule being invented. Spotify has required Family and Duo members to live at the same address for years. What changed is the enforcement — from an address you type in to a scan you have to show up for. That hits people who were breaking the rule, and also people who were not: a student away at college, a partner travelling for work. Real households are not always in one room within seven days.

Notice what the table refuses to do: crown one winner. Each service wins a row, and that is the point.
- Cheapest family plan: Apple Music wins. $19.99 beats Spotify's $21.99 by $2 a month, $24 a year, and beats YouTube's $26.99 by $7 a month. At a full six members, Apple is $3.33 a head — the lowest per-person price of the three.
- Best deal for exactly two people: Spotify wins. Duo at $18.99 is the only true couples plan here. Apple and YouTube would charge you the full family price for two people. But note the trap inside Spotify's own lineup: Family is only $3 more than Duo ($21.99 vs $18.99) and adds four more seats. A couple that might add a roommate, a kid, or a parent later should skip Duo and go straight to Family.
- Best value beyond music: YouTube wins. $26.99 is the priciest family plan, but it is the only one that also removes ads from YouTube video, adds background play and downloads for video, and includes YouTube Music Premium. If your household watches YouTube daily, the music plan is almost a side effect. If it only listens to music, YouTube is the worst deal on the table.
- Best student deal: a tie, and a genuinely good one. Spotify Student ($6.99) throws in Hulu with ads; Apple Student ($6.99) throws in Apple TV. Pick by which video service you would actually watch, not by the $0 price difference.
- Best solo fallback: Spotify wins on price, Apple wins on simplicity. A lone listener who drops out of a family plan pays $12.99 at Spotify, $11.99 at Apple, $15.99 at YouTube — but Spotify's $10.99 Basic plan undercuts them all if you never touch audiobooks. The catch, and it is a telling one: on Duo and Family, the included 15 hours of audiobooks a month belong to the plan manager only.
So who should switch, and who should stay?
Stay on Spotify Family if everyone on it genuinely lives with you. $21.99 for six people is still a good price, and a household that can pass a QR scan has nothing to fear from one. Do the scan the day it arrives, not on day six.
Move to Apple Music Family if price per head decides it and your house runs on iPhones. $19.99, six seats, lossless and Spatial Audio included. The July 2026 rise (Family $16.99 to $19.99) stung, but it still undercuts Spotify — and Apple has not announced an in-person check to match Spotify's QR scan.
Move to YouTube Premium Family if your household watches more YouTube than it listens to music. One $26.99 bill kills video ads for six people and covers their music too. Just know it is the highest family price of the three, with the same same-household requirement.
Do not join a family plan you are not eligible for, on any of the three. This is the sentence the whole QR story is really about. The 12-month lockout is Spotify's penalty, but Apple and YouTube both limit family plans to a household or family group too. A seat that looks cheap in October and vanishes in November was never a deal.
What to do if the QR prompt lands on your phone
- If you live with the plan manager: scan it in person, promptly. Seven days sounds generous until a work trip, an exam week, or a holiday eats five of them.
- If you are away temporarily: tell the manager now, before the prompt arrives, and plan a visit or a video call around it — knowing that a live screen-share is the workaround some users report, and that Spotify says it will keep improving the check.
- If you do not live at that address: do not wait to be removed. Price your fallback now — Spotify Basic at $10.99, Apple Individual at $11.99, or a student plan if you qualify — because the fallback after a failed check is Spotify Free plus a 12-month wait, which is the worst seat in the house.
- If you run the plan: count active listeners, not seats. A family plan with two real listeners on Spotify costs $11 a head; the same two people on Apple Music Family cost $10 a head; on YouTube, $13.50. The per-person math only looks magical when the seats are actually filled.
And if you are the person holding a household plan together — collecting each member's share, remembering who paid, keeping the group chat in one place — that admin work is the unpriced part of every family plan. Browse open families if you are looking for a seat on a plan you are eligible for, or see how other hosts keep their seats and payments straight.
