How To Get Cheap Spotify Premium (without VPN tricks or losing your playlists)
Spotify Premium is about $12 a month on its own. VPN country tricks and cheap "lifetime" accounts are getting people kicked off. Here is why, and the legitimate way to pay about $3.33 a month.
A solo Spotify Premium plan in the US costs $11.99 a month. That's about $144 a year just to skip ads and download music.
Search for a cheaper way and you'll quickly find two shortcuts:
- Using a VPN to sign up in a country where Spotify is cheaper.
- Buying a "1-year" or "lifetime" Premium account from a reseller for a one-off $10 to $20.
Both look like a great deal for a few weeks. Here's why they tend to end badly, and the boring, legitimate way that actually saves you over $100 a year.

Why the VPN country trick keeps breaking
The idea is simple: pretend to be in a country where Premium costs a few dollars, sign up there, and keep listening at home.
The problem is that your location is only one part of what Spotify looks at. Its own help page says that if you change your account's country, you may need to update your payment method "to one that's issued there." In other words, the card or payment method has to match the country.
That's why the trick has become so fragile:
- Your payment has to match the country. A card issued at home doesn't match an account set to another country, and that mismatch is easy for Spotify to spot no matter which VPN server you use.
- Your listening pattern has to match too. An account billed in one country but streaming every single day from another looks very different from someone on holiday.
- People are being moved back to Free. Through 2026, users on Reddit have posted Spotify emails saying they can't stay on a plan based in another country, followed by their account being switched back to the free tier, often several friends at once.
Even when it works, you're one email away from losing Premium, and usually right after you've paid.

Why cheap "lifetime" accounts disappear
The other shortcut is buying Premium from a marketplace listing or a chat group. These sellers are rarely selling real gift cards. Usually it's one of these:
- Someone else's account. Logins taken from data leaks get resold. Once the real owner changes their password, you're out.
- Throwaway family plans. The seller sets up family plans on short-lived payment methods, fills the seats, and keeps your money. When the payment fails a month or two later, the plan falls apart.
The hidden cost: if you're on a family plan and fail Spotify's address check, Spotify moves your account to Free and blocks you from joining any other Family or Duo plan for 12 months. If you care about years of playlists and recommendations, that's a lot to risk for a few dollars.

The legitimate way: the family plan maths
The safest way to pay less is Spotify's own Premium Family plan. In the US it's $19.99 a month for up to 6 accounts, each one fully separate.
Premium Individual (1 person) $11.99 a month, so $11.99 per person each month and $143.88 per person each year. This is the baseline, so there are no savings.
Premium Duo (2 people) $16.99 a month, so $8.50 per person each month and $101.94 per person each year. Each person saves $41.94 a year compared with going solo.
Premium Family (6 people) $19.99 a month, so $3.33 per person each month and $39.98 per person each year. Each person saves $103.90 a year compared with going solo.
With six people on a family plan:
- You pay about $3.33 a month instead of $11.99.
- Everyone keeps their own account. Nobody sees your playlists, history or Wrapped.
- You pay in your own currency, from your own country. No VPN, no fake addresses.

How to run a Spotify family without the headaches
If it's that much cheaper, why doesn't everyone do it? Because organizing one yourself is a hassle. Someone pays $19.99 every month, someone forgets to pay them back, and the host quietly covers the gap until they give up.
1. Have the address ready
Spotify's Family plan is meant for people who live together, and every member confirms the plan manager's full address when they join. Spotify may ask again later, and you only get 7 days to answer. Keep it saved.
2. Pick one payment date
One date for everyone, a couple of days before Spotify charges the host. Then nobody is chasing different people on different days.
3. Don't leave seats empty
An empty seat on a $19.99 plan is about $3.33 a month the host pays for nothing. When someone leaves, fill the seat.
